"If you read just 10 books per week, then you'll reach 1000 books in two years."

What is 1000 Before Before Prep?

1000 Books Before Prep is a fun way to encourage reading in early childhood. 1000 books probably sounds like too many, but if you read three books per day, you can finish in under a year!

We know that children have favourite books that they love to hear over and over again, and each time a book is read it counts toward the goal of 1000. You do NOT have to read 1000 different books.

Parents and caregivers are a child's first and best teachers, but they don't have to do that with flashcards, drills or workbooks. Just reading with children helps them learn new words and learn about the world in which they live.

The initiative was inspired by Mem Fox's book Reading Magic.  Breman Public Library in Indiana was the first to develop "1000 books before Kindergarten". In the decade since, many libraries across the United States have started their own "1000 books" programs. The idea I'm using at my school was developed from Ohio, Licking County Library's program.

How the program works

  1. Read almost every day
  2. Record the titles of the books you read
  3. Books that are re-read count towards the overall title
  4. Let me know when you've read each 100, and you'll receive a certificate

Who reads 1000 books before prep?

Kids any age up to prep can join in the fun. Even if your child has started Prep you can join in. We call that "1000 Books before Prep finishes."
